Interaction Sessions with the Hon’ble MLAs on SDG

The Government of Assam has adopted Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) in its policy discourse and evolved the process to a new height over the last two years. In order to involve the policy makers more actively in this process, the Hon’ble Speaker, Assam Legislative Assembly organized a two-days  Interaction Sessions with the Hon’ble MLAs on 26th & 27th February’2018 in the Central Hall of Assam Legislative Assembly to familiarise them with the concept of SDGs in the state.

Eight Technical Sessions were held during the two days interaction on the following topics:

  1. The Strategies and Actions for achieving the SDGs in Assam and the Government initiatives for promoting the SDGs in Assam.
  2. Eliminating all forms of Poverty and Hunger in Assam(SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 2: Zero Hunger)
  3. Ensuring good health and well-being for all in Assam (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation)
  4. Promoting inclusive and quality education for all in Assam(SDG 4: Quality Education)
  5. Promoting growth, infrastructure, industrial development and employment in Assam (SDG 7: Affordable & Clean Energy, SDG 8: Good Jobs and Economic Growth and SDG 9: Industry, innovation, and Infrastructure).
  6. Building Sustainable, Resilient and Safe Cities and Communities in Assam(SD 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities).
  7. Ensuring sustainable future through protecting the environment and developing a response to Climate Change in Assam (SDG 12: Sustainable Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life below Water and SDG: 15 Life on Land)
  8. Developing Peace, Justice, Good Governance and Strong Institutions in Assam (SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
  9. Reducing inequalities and promoting gender equality ensuring no one left behind (SDG 5: Gender Equality and SDG 10: Reducing Inequalities).
  10. Implementing the SDGs in Assam through financial planning, monitoring and capacity building in Assam ( SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals) and present Scenario in the state.

For each Technical Sessions experts from outside and inside the country were invited for deliberation.

Shri Anurag Goel, IAS (Retd), SDGs Adviser to UNDP, Dr. Usha Jumani,  Management Consultant and Independent Research Scholars, Dr. Devi Prashad Shetty, Narayana Health, Banglore, Dr. Mihir Kanti Chaudhury, Adviser to Govt. of Assam(Education) and former Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University, Prof. Sebastian Morris, IIM, Ahmedabad, Dr. Navroz K Dubash, Senior Fellow,  Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi, Justice Hrishikesh Roy, Gauhati High Court, Shri Ashok Lahiri, Chairman, Bandhan Bank Ltd, Dr Shiladitya Chatterjee, Adviser, Centre for SDGs, AASC had participated in the Interaction Sessions as Experts. Further, all Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Commissioner & Secretaries and Secretaries, Govt of Assam participated as Resource Persons and Panellists in the respective technical sessions.

In the first session of the Interaction, Hon’ble Speaker gave his Opening Remarks on SDGs and Hon’ble Minister, Finance, Transformation and Development  Departments etc delivered his speech on “Importance of SDGs in Context of Assam” and Shri V.K Pipersenia, IAS  than Chief Secretary, Assam explained the role of SDGs in the development process.

Hon’ble MLAs present in the Interaction actively participated in the Technical Sessions.
